Spring Clean your Computer

Spring has sprung and although the weather hasn’t been the best, it’s a good time to think about giving your computer an annual Spring Clean.

Computer Temperatures
Computer cases have at least two fans constantly running to cool the CPU processor chip and the computer power supply. Cool air is continually sucked in and passes over these hot components.
If your computer sits on the floor under a desk it will also be pulling in a lot of dust from the carpet or the air around the computer.

Windows 10

Windows 10 has now been available for just over a month and as we expected the upgrade process hasn’t gone smoothly for everyone.  We have been quite busy recovering failed installs, fixing Blue Screen errors, recovering lost data or rolling back to Windows 7 on computers that are just not powerful enough to run Windows 10.

Email

Email is a tool I am sure we all use, but it can be the cause of a lot of problems and frustrations.
This month I am going to go over a number of points that you should know about your email.
Most people will have an email address provided by their Internet Service Provider such as name@xtra.co.nz or name@orcon.net.nz. It’s great that ISP’s provide this service, but there are downsides to using these email addresses.

In my opinion the biggest issue is when you choose to switch ISP’s. For example, when you close your account with Xtra to move to Slingshot, you will lose your xtra.co.nz email address. The only way to keep it from being deleted is to continue paying your old ISP a monthly charge.

Windows 10 – Is it time to upgrade your Operating System?

You may have noticed a new icon pop up in at the bottom left of your screen by the date and time.  If you click on this icon you will be prompted to preregister for your copy of Windows 10.

Microsoft’s latest Operating System Windows 10 will be released for free on July 29.  This is the first time Microsoft has given away an operating system at no charge, but it is only a limited offer for 12 months and there are some excluded upgrades. We don’t believe these exclusions will affect many of our readers but if you haven’t seen the offer, you may just simply need to run your Windows Updates.

Computer Scams

Just recently someone I know very well got scammed out of $1000.00 cash by a fraudster on Facebook.
A Facebook Profile of a friend was copied and used to message them asking if they had seen their name on the winners list of the “Facebook Lottery”. They were put in touch with someone who congratulated them for winning $100,000.00.

To claim the $100,000.00 all they had to do was deposit $1000.00 into an account via western union money transfer, but they had to act now as the prize would be gone in the next 30 mins.

Protect your Data

How would you feel if I told you that all of your data on your computer has been lost, and there is no way to get it back?
All your baby photos, wedding albums, music, email and documents have all been lost for good?
Most people would be devastated, yet most people don’t have a working and reliable backup of their files.

The Bad News

Hard Drives failing, aggressive viruses, accidental deletion, fire and theft are just some of the ways your precious files can be lost.

Speed up your PC

There are a number of reasons why your computers performance can degrade over time. Listed below are the 5 most common reasons:

TO MANY PROGRAMS
The longer you have your computer, the more programs can get installed. A lot of these programs automatically set themselves to load when you turn the computer on. When running, they all use their own little chunk of RAM (or Operating Memory)
